As first reported by 2GB's Ben Fordham, the man—who worked in Sydney’s northern suburbs and the CBD—was charged in October 2024 and is currently in custody. For legal reasons, police haven’t released his name, where he worked, or any identifying details about the children involved. What we do know is that investigators allegedly found confronting material on the man’s phone, and he’s been accused of inappropriate behaviour. Despite the serious nature of the charges, police believe only a very small number of children were directly involved. Still, in an effort to be thorough and transparent, they’ve sent out more than 1,000 letters to families whose children may have crossed paths with the man. “If you received a letter, it means your child might have had contact with him—not that they were a victim,” police explained. Authorities are urging families to read the letter carefully and contact the dedicated hotline provided if they have any questions or concerns. The NSW Police Force and the Australian Federal Police are working closely with other agencies, including NSW Health, the Department of Education, the Department of Communities and Justice, and the Office of the Children’s Guardian, as part of a wider investigation and victim identification process. UNSW also edged down a spot, from 19th to 20th. Out of 36 Australian universities ranked, a whopping 25 dropped in position, while only seven managed to climb. It’s the third-largest percentage fall globally—only Austria and Russia fared worse. So, what’s going on? According to experts, it’s a mix of funding cuts, uncertainty over international student policies, and growing competition from fast-improving universities in countries like China and India. Angel Calderon, a strategist at RMIT and advisor to the rankings board, says the sector’s problems have been building for years. “Restructuring, staff changes, funding issues—these all impact how the world sees our universities,” he explained. “We’ve seen Australia’s academic and employer reputation steadily drop.” And that reputation is key. The QS rankings are based on several factors—reputation, research impact, teaching quality, international outlook, and sustainability. This year, Australia was hit hardest in academic and employer reputation, with 20 and 30 universities falling in those categories respectively. More and more Australians are dipping into their superannuation early to cover the cost of critical medical treatments—but it’s coming with some financial catches. Take Rose Charles, for example. It was Christmas 2020 when her life changed dramatically. "I didn’t ask to get cancer, I didn’t want to get cancer," she shared. After 16 rounds of chemo, 30 rounds of radiation, a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction, she was forced to stop working while raising a teenage son. "You’ve still got gas bills, you’ve still got school fees," Rose said. To get through it, she joined thousands of Australians accessing their super early. "I only took out the cost of one procedure and that was $35,000," she explained. And she's far from alone. More than 50,000 Australians accessed their super on compassionate grounds last financial year. That adds up to over $1 billion released. "We’ve certainly seen an increase—about 10% over the last 12 months," said Peter Hogg, general manager at Aware Super. But here’s where it gets tricky. What many people don’t realise, including Rose, is that you still have to pay tax when you withdraw super early. Because super contributions are taxed at a lower rate when they go in, pulling the money out before age 60 means you have to pay back that tax benefit—up to 22%, on top of the 15% you already paid going in. "So the government got a fair chunk," Rose said. There is a bit of good news. If your marginal tax rate is lower than 37%, you could get some of that tax refunded at the end of the financial year. Still, financial experts are urging caution. "It’s quite a high rate for people who have immediate needs. We think there’s probably a better way to handle this," said Mary Delahunty, CEO of the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA). The bottom line? Big news for LGBTQIA+ rights and healthcare in Australia — the country is officially lifting its long-standing restrictions on blood and plasma donations from sexually active gay and bisexual men. From July 14, the rules that once banned many gay, bisexual, and transgender people from donating will start to change — with plasma donations leading the way. So, what’s changing? Until now, men and transgender women who had sex with men in the previous three months were barred from donating blood or plasma — part of rules introduced decades ago to reduce the risk of HIV transmission. Similar restrictions also applied to sex workers and women who had sex with bisexual men. But those rules are being scrapped — and Australia is set to become the first country in the world to remove all sexual activity-based restrictions for plasma donation, according to Lifeblood. What does this mean? Plasma donations: Anyone, regardless of sexuality or gender, can donate even if they’ve had recent sexual activity , provided they meet the new safety guidelines. Blood donations: The eligibility criteria will change in 2026, moving away from focusing on sexual orientation and instead asking about specific risk behaviours. New screening questions will now ask all donors  (not just men) if they’ve had anal sex with new or multiple partners in the past 3 months. If yes: They’ll need to wait three months to donate blood — but can still donate plasma. People on PrEP (HIV prevention medication) will also be eligible to donate plasma (but not blood yet). People with HIV or with a partner who has HIV are still ineligible for both blood and plasma donations. Why now? The shift comes after research by Lifeblood and the Kirby Institute at UNSW confirmed that these changes won’t impact the safety of Australia’s blood and plasma supply. That’s because plasma is treated through a process called pathogen inactivation, which filters out viruses and bacteria, reducing infection risk to patients. With global demand for plasma at an all-time high — and rising — Lifeblood hopes this move will encourage up to 625,000 new eligible donors. “Blood safety is and always will be our top priority,” said Lifeblood’s Chief Medical Officer Jo Pink.“But we know these rules have been incredibly difficult and have contributed to stigma in the LGBTQIA+ community.” The decision has been widely welcomed by health and equality advocates. “This change unlocks thousands of life-saving plasma donations,” said Dash Heath-Paynter, CEO of Health Equity Matters. That’s the message from Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny, who today introduced a new bill to state parliament targeting offenders who “post and boast” about their crimes on social media or messaging apps. Under the proposal, posting about crimes like burglary, car theft, home invasion, affray, and robbery could become a separate offence, punishable by up to two years in jail — on top of the penalty for the original crime. Kilkenny said the move responds to a troubling trend where mainly young offenders film or post about their criminal behaviour for views, clout or street cred. “It is retraumatising victims. It is driving fear in our communities. We need to put a stop to it — and we need to do it now,” she said. Currently, this type of online behaviour is only considered an aggravating factor in court, but the new law would make it a crime on its own. What else is changing? Victoria Police will get new powers to issue search warrants to investigate online crime. Posting criminal content would be a criminal act, even after the offence is committed. Bystanders or journalists who post content without involvement in the crime would not be penalised. Police Minister Anthony Carbines urged people to report any such content: “Make a report. In many cases, we can only act when people speak up.” The opposition is also expected to support the bill, having long pushed for harsher penalties and more online accountability for offenders. Starting July 1, nearly 10 million Australians will automatically see more money going into their superannuation, thanks to a government-mandated increase in the super guarantee rate. The rate will rise from 11.5% to 12%, and while that might seem small, it could mean thousands of extra dollars in your retirement nest egg. According to the Super Members Council (SMC), the change will put an extra $317 into the average worker’s super over the 2025-2026 financial year. But for younger Aussies, the long-term gains are where it gets really exciting. If you’re around 30 years old, the SMC says this one change could eventually boost your super by $22,000. And when you factor in the full increase from 9% (a decade ago) to the new 12%, it could add up to $132,000 extra by retirement. That’s real money — the kind that helps you cover the bills, take holidays, or simply enjoy life with more peace of mind. Who’s benefitting the most? More than half of those getting the boost are under 40. People in their 30s will see the biggest benefit. About 1 in 3 of those gaining from the change earn less than $50,000 a year. And 70% of recipients earn under $100,000. Where you live also matters a little — West Australians will get the highest average boost at $344, while Tasmanians will get around $284. Super Members Council CEO Misha Schubert says the change is all about securing a better future: “This boost to retirement savings will help fund the things that matter most — more help with paying the bills, spending time and making memories with the family, trips away and financial security.” So, come July 1, you won’t need to do anything — but your super will start growing just a little faster.
