The upward trend continued into June, nudging the median even higher to $1,011,000. That milestone puts Brisbane second only to Sydney in terms of house prices, officially overtaking both Melbourne and Canberra in the national rankings. But Brisbane is now $63,000 pricier than Melbourne, and $30,000 ahead of Canberra. So, what’s driving the surge? Cotality says Brisbane’s boom really took off during the COVID-19 pandemic, with house prices skyrocketing 76.1% between June 2020 and June 2025. A big part of that growth came from interstate migration, as Aussies sought more affordable housing, warmer weather, and a more relaxed lifestyle. In fact, Brisbane’s population grew by 9.2% — that’s 235,000 people — in just four years, far outpacing the national growth of 6% over the same period. But here’s the catch: That popularity — and the rising house prices that come with it — could start to put off new buyers. There are already signs that price growth is slowing down. House values rose 1.9% in the latest quarter, compared to 3.5% a year ago, and way down from the 10.2% surge we saw back in late 2021. Western Australia already got a taste of the chill, with two fast-moving cold fronts hitting Perth and surrounds on Sunday and Monday. Winds topped 100 km/h, and there were quick bursts of rain across the region. Now, the current cold front is sweeping across South Australia, heading into Victoria and NSW today, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. And if that wasn’t enough — another, stronger front is right behind it, set to roll through by Thursday. So, where’s the snow? The Victorian Alps could see bursts of snow today, along with heavy winds and rain in lower-lying areas. By Thursday, it’s shaping up to be even snowier, with 20 to 40cm of snow expected across alpine NSW and Victoria, with snow falling as low as 800 metres in elevation. Even areas like the NSW Central Tablelands might get a light dusting. And it’s not just the mountains getting cold. In South Australia, Adelaide is set to shiver through highs of just 13–14°C midweek, and there’s even a chance of a few snowflakes on Mount Lofty — only 25 minutes from the CBD! Melbourne is looking at a max of just 12°C on Thursday, while Sydney should hang around 17°C. But the real chill will hit Canberra, where it’s only expected to reach 8°C, and overnight temps could dip below zero later in the week. The good news? Three of the big four banks — Westpac, CBA and NAB — are tipping a rate cut in July, while ANZ is still betting on August. But if the cut comes through tomorrow, it’s likely to be a 25 basis point drop, bringing the cash rate down to 3.60%. For homeowners who've been feeling the squeeze from back-to-back rate hikes over the past two years, this would be a very welcome relief. According to Money.com.au , a 0.25% cut could mean: $90 in monthly savings for someone with a $600,000 loan, $106 saved on a $700,000 mortgage, $120 back in the pocket for those with an $800,000 loan, and A solid $150 a month saved if you’ve got a $1 million mortgage. All of that adds up — especially considering this would be the third cut since the RBA started easing the cash rate. For many borrowers, that’s the magic number. “It’s this third rate cut — the rule of three in action — that people believe will finally bring meaningful relief  to their household budgets,” said Money.com.au ’s mortgage expert, Debbie Hays . Hays also pointed out that the timing couldn’t be better — with tax return season in full swing, any extra room in the budget is being gratefully received by families doing it tough. But the impact doesn’t stop with current mortgage holders.For those still waiting to enter the market, a third rate cut could boost borrowing capacity by up to $50,000, depending on the lender. “That might open the door to an extra bedroom or a better suburb,” Hays said. “But it’s a double-edged sword  — more borrowing power means more competition  and likely higher property prices .” So whether you're already paying off a home or saving for one, tomorrow's RBA decision is one to watch closely.
