The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is hitting pause on enrolments for more than 100 courses as it tries to deal with a massive $100 million budget shortfall.
The changes will kick in for the Autumn 2026 semester and affect seven different schools — with the Faculty of Design and Society being the hardest hit, losing enrolments for over 60 courses.
In a statement, UTS stressed that this doesn’t mean those courses are gone for good.
“Suspension of new student intake does not mean a course will automatically be closed,” the university said. “Sometimes intakes are suspended ahead of phase out, some are paused while courses are redesigned to refresh curriculum and better meet student demand.”
The timing comes as the uni faces serious financial pressure — back in April, The Sydney Morning Herald reported UTS was looking to cut about 400 jobs.
Still, the university says the move is about improving things for students.
“Our priority is to be a student-centred university offering an outstanding experience and courses that reflect student demand and interest,” the statement read.
They also reassured current students that they won’t be affected by the changes.
Right now, UTS has around 51,000 students and more than 4,000 staff — and while it’s clear some big changes are on the way, the uni insists it’s all about reshaping its offerings to match what students actually want.
