Australians are being urged to stay alert as a harsh heatwave continues to drive dangerous fire conditions and soaring temperatures across the country.
Most regions will see dry and sunny weather today, but the central and northern NSW coast will be wetter, bringing some relief after a devastating weekend of bushfires.
Fires across the NSW coast destroyed at least 20 homes and claimed one life. A major blaze near Koolewong, Phegans Bay and Woy Woy Bay burned more than 129 hectares, sending thick smoke across the area.
Meteorologists say coastal areas will be cooler today, helping firefighters, though gusty sea breezes could still affect active fire zones.
Rain is expected along parts of the NSW coast and nearby ranges, with a storm possible in the far northeast.
While the rainfall may ease fire conditions, it brings a new risk. Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, large hail and damaging winds are possible later in the day.
