Melbourne’s Chapel Street joins new 30km/h speed limit trial

Several Victorian roads will soon be part of new 30km/h speed limit trials under the state government’s road safety program.
Melbourne’s famous Chapel Street is among the locations set for lower speed limits, with Stonnington Council receiving $331,000 to roll out the trial along Chapel St, Ewart St and Osborne Ave.
An additional $64,000 has been allocated for a broader 30km/h trial across Melbourne’s inner south-east.
The funding is part of the Allan Government’s expanded Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, which now includes more than 430 projects statewide.
Other councils receiving support include Merri-Bek and Bass Coast, where new low-speed zones are planned for areas including Surf Beach, Smiths Beach, Sunset Strip and Silverleaves. Geelong Council has also been approved to reduce speed limits on Portarlington Street.
The wider program will also fund traffic calming measures such as speed bumps and bicycle safety improvements.
Road Safety Minister Ros Spence said the upgrades are aimed at making local streets safer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians across Victoria.
