Retail banking boss Damien Macrae told staff that the bank had already started upskilling employees, with 33 workers stepping into home finance manager roles over the past year. Westpac has also set up a $5 million “development fund” to help staff in this wave of cuts retrain. Macrae framed the changes as about shifting priorities, not shrinking the workforce. “Over the coming year we will appoint around 200 more lenders and bankers… At the same time, we will need around 200 fewer tellers and personal bankers,” he said. The bank, which employs about 30,000 people, cut 1500 jobs in May but also hired 5000 people in the past year. It insists there will be no branch closures, pointing to its moratorium on shutting regional branches until 2027 and recent reopenings in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. But the union isn’t convinced. “This is a test case for what employers should be doing. When roles are cut, workers must be re-skilled and redeployed – not discarded,” Angrisano said. The shake-up comes amid a rough run for Australian bank staff. ANZ is axing 3500 jobs plus 1000 contractor roles, NAB is cutting 400 tech and enterprise jobs, and CBA has announced 164 job losses. New research from Domain shows that in elite suburbs, the gap between paying rent and paying off a mortgage can be massive – sometimes thousands of dollars cheaper each month to rent instead of buy. Domain senior economist Joel Bowman asked the classic question: is it cheaper to rent or buy?  His answer: for those who want a glamorous lifestyle, renting wins out at the top end of the market. “At the very premium end, you get the largest gap where it is a lot cheaper to rent compared to buying,” Bowman explained. Take Bellevue Hill in Sydney’s east. Buying there could cost you a staggering $7913 more per month in mortgage repayments compared to renting. Other Sydney hot spots with big gaps include Vaucluse (+$5008), Mosman (+$4118), Northbridge (+$3777) and Rose Bay (+$3523). In Melbourne, Toorak tops the list at $3240 more to buy than rent, followed by Canterbury, Balwyn, Malvern and Middle Park. Interestingly, in many of these suburbs – Bellevue Hill, Toorak, Vaucluse, Mosman, Northbridge and Rose Bay – renters actually outnumber people paying off a mortgage, according to the last census. For Martin Stark, a long-time Mosman resident, the suburb’s lifestyle was irresistible. Originally from the UK, he first tested Mosman as a renter before buying an apartment there years later. “Going down to Balmoral Beach on a Sunday afternoon, coming from the UK, felt like I’d been away to Barcelona for a weekend, but it was a five-minute walk,” he said. Economists say the divide comes down to priorities: Buyers are chasing capital growth and future financial benefits, which they’re willing to pay a premium for. Renters are seeking lifestyle and value – without the same long-term financial incentives. Big change is coming to NSW classrooms next term – every public school student from Year 5 and up will have access to a purpose-built artificial intelligence app. The tool, called NSWEduChat, has already been trialled in 50 schools, and from October 14 it’ll roll out statewide. The app is curriculum-aligned and designed to help students build AI literacy in a safe environment. This move follows the government’s recent announcement of a new Office for AI, which will oversee how the technology is safely introduced across the NSW public service. Acting Education Minister Courtney Houssos says the initiative shows the strength of the public system in leading classroom innovation. “Generative AI is rapidly becoming part of everyday life, and through NSWEduChat we are helping our students to safely and responsibly build the digital literacy that will set them up for success in the jobs of the future,” she said. She added that giving free access to all students in Years 5 to 12 will help “level the playing field” when it comes to AI in education. Unlike commercial AI tools, NSWEduChat won’t just hand over answers. Instead, it nudges students to think critically, asking guided questions and encouraging reasoning. During the trial, the top five ways students used the app were: getting writing feedback brainstorming ideas using it as a virtual assistant consolidating learning planning and structuring written responses Teachers haven’t been left out either — they already have their own version of NSWEduChat, plus access to Lesson Library, a new platform with curriculum-aligned resources written by NSW teachers. This year, the October long weekend runs from Friday, October 3 to Monday, October 6. Who actually gets the day off? If you’re in South Australia, NSW or the ACT, you’ll enjoy the Labour Day holiday on Monday, October 6.Queenslanders also get the day off — but theirs is for the King’s Birthday. Unfortunately, if you live in the Northern Territory, Tasmania, Victoria or Western Australia, there’s no public holiday coming your way in October. Why is Queensland’s King’s Birthday different? Most of Australia marks the King’s Birthday in June, but Queensland shifted it to October to spread out public holidays more evenly across the year. The change was locked in back in 2015 under the Holidays Act 1983.Western Australia also does things differently, celebrating the King’s Birthday on various dates in September, depending on the region. What about Victoria? Victorians don’t get the October long weekend, but they do score a holiday on Friday, September 26 — the day before the AFL Grand Final. Some argue it falls short of the widely demanded 75 per cent cut, while others question the economic modelling and what it might cost taxpayers. Ley, who admitted she doesn’t yet have a full energy policy, promised that when she does, it will “deliver a stable, reliable energy grid that provides affordable energy to households and businesses, while still playing Australia’s role internationally in reducing emissions.” “That’s what an energy policy looks like,” she said in Adelaide. “The modelling so far has been a cruel hoax for every single Australian.” She slammed the government’s assumptions, which rely on Australia meeting its legislated 2030 emissions reduction target of 43 per cent — a goal she said “not an expert in Australia” actually expects to be fully met. (Forecasts suggest the country will fall just 0.4 per cent short, which most experts see as negligible.) Ley also hinted at her party’s future plans, pointing to a working group exploring “the latest in nuclear technology” in the US. She said the Coalition needs to avoid Labor’s approach: setting targets to impress internationally while leaving businesses struggling to operate, grow, and export. According to Weatherzone, the city hit its September average rainfall of 79.3mm earlier this week, thanks to light showers on Tuesday and Wednesday. By Thursday morning, another round of rain pushed the total up to 93mm for the month. That capped off a very soggy winter: June brought in 129mm, July totalled 174mm, and August delivered a huge 203mm. The last time Perth had this kind of consistent run of wet weather was back in 2007. The downpours were a big shift from the long stretch of below-average rain Perth has endured — from last November through to May this year. Forecasters say the city and much of WA’s south-west had been in a rainfall deficit since September 2021, which only just came to an end. Even so, Perth’s water storage is still only at 48% capacity, showing just how dry it’s been over the past few years. Looking ahead, though, things are about to dry up again. The forecast points to clearer skies over the next week, and by next Wednesday Perth is set to hit 30°C — a taste of summer just around the corner. Members of Australia’s 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment have been working alongside the Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering, sharing knowledge and learning from each other as part of Indo-Pacific Endeavour. The collaboration focused on improvised explosive device (IED) search and tactics, with one of the most valuable contributions being Australia’s humanitarian approach to de-mining. These lessons are vital for both countries, especially in keeping civilians safe in areas still affected by landmines and unexploded ordnance from past conflicts. The exchange also touched on modern engineering practices — including how drones are now being used in conflict zones. Drawing on experiences from the war in Ukraine, both teams explored how technology is reshaping battlefield capability and efficiency. A standout moment came when Colonel Amanda Johnston, Australia’s Defence Adviser to Sri Lanka, met Captain Chamika Kumaranathunga, the first Sri Lankan woman to qualify as an explosive ordnance disposal operator. Colonel Johnston, herself an Army engineer and former Commanding Officer of the 6th Engineer Support Regiment, said the meeting was especially meaningful. “I was honoured to meet Captain Kumaranathunga and share some of my own experiences, particularly from commanding Operation Render Safe in 2014,” she said.“Indo-Pacific Endeavour is all about knowledge-sharing and building people-to-people links. Connecting with future leaders like Captain Kumaranathunga is really rewarding.” The initiative highlights how regional defence activities are just as much about people and partnerships as they are about operations.
