Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is looking to shake up Australia’s supermarket scene — and he’s asking a retail giant from the Middle East to help do it. While stopping over in Abu Dhabi on his way back from meetings in New York and London, Albanese sat down with LuLu Hypermarket chairman Yusuff Ali. LuLu is a massive chain in the Gulf region, with more than 260 stores, and Albanese wants them to bring their business to Australia to break the Coles and Woolworths duopoly. “I want to see more competition,” Albanese told reporters. “This is a significant company — the largest in the Middle East and the second-largest in Saudi Arabia. Aldi came to Australia and made a difference, and LuLu could too.” Right now, Woolies and Coles dominate Australia’s grocery game. The ACCC says Woolworths holds 38% of the market, Coles has 29%, and Aldi just 9%. It’s no secret shoppers have felt the squeeze, with grocery prices jumping 24% in the last five years, making Aussie supermarkets some of the most profitable in the world. Interestingly, LuLu already stocks plenty of Australian products in its Middle Eastern stores — from beef to Tim Tams — and sometimes they’re even cheaper there than back home. During Albanese’s visit, the chain put on quite a show, decorating a store with Aussie products and flags. Ali said he was honoured to host the PM and praised the “very high-quality products” Australia exports. The talks came as Albanese also celebrated a new free trade agreement with the UAE. The deal will wipe tariffs from 99% of Australian exports and open the door to more investment from the UAE’s sovereign wealth fund. “This is about opening up Middle Eastern markets and delivering for Australian businesses, consumers, and our economy,” Albanese said. Australia’s in for a real split when it comes to weather this week — cool and wet in the south, but warm to downright hot in the east and north. According to Weatherzone, it all comes down to a developing negative southern annular mode, or SAM. Basically, that’s when the belt of westerly winds sitting between Australia and Antarctica shifts a bit further north. In spring, that usually means more rain and cold fronts hitting southern Australia, while the north and east end up with drier, warmer conditions. And you can really see the difference when you look at the capital city forecasts. Sydney and Brisbane are in for plenty of sunshine, with Sydney sitting in the high 20s before cooling slightly into the mid-20s later in the week. Brisbane, on the other hand, will be sweltering — most days hitting 30 degrees or above, and a scorching 35 on Thursday. Down south, it’s a totally different story. Melbourne and Adelaide are bracing for rainy days, and it doesn’t look like the mercury will climb past 20 degrees until at least the weekend. Meanwhile, the north is gearing up for some serious heat. Parts of the Kimberley, Pilbara, and Top End could see temperatures soar into the low 40s. A Telstra outage is causing some serious headaches for people in Western Australia’s South West, with triple-zero calls being affected. Telstra says the problem started after a power outage hit one of its mobile sites at Abbey Beach Resort in Broadwater, about 230km south of Perth, around midnight. Although the power’s back on, the site hasn’t fully recovered, and customers are still struggling to make calls. A technician is on the way to sort it out, but in the meantime, WA Police have warned the public that even emergency calls are being disrupted. They put out an alert this morning, saying people using Telstra in the area might not be able to reach triple zero as usual. If you’re affected, the advice is to check in with neighbours, family, or friends who have a working phone, just in case you need it. Police also urged people to look out for vulnerable loved ones until the issue’s fixed. Telstra says mobile users should still be able to connect to triple zero by piggybacking off other providers’ networks, or simply by using a landline if one’s available. This outage comes at a time when trust in the emergency call system is already shaky. Just earlier this month, an Optus outage blocked more than 600 triple-zero calls and was linked to three deaths, including one in WA. Communications Minister Anika Wells admitted confidence in the system has “no doubt been shaken.” And if that wasn’t enough, Optus confirmed yesterday that another 4500 people were affected by a fresh outage — including nine emergency calls. Spring weather across Australia is about to get interesting, thanks to some unusual activity happening over Antarctica. Meteorologists are keeping a close eye on what’s known as Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) — a rare event where the air in the lower stratosphere above Antarctica suddenly heats up. This warming has the potential to mess with the polar vortex, the giant low-pressure system that usually keeps icy air swirling neatly around the poles during winter. Normally, the polar vortex weakens in spring as we move toward warmer months. But with this sudden warming in the atmosphere, the vortex could become unstable and start shifting around. If that happens, Australia’s spring weather could be in for a shake-up. From late September into early October, cooler Antarctic air might be dragged northward by the polar jet stream. That could mean more rain and strong westerly winds for places like Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia. On the flip side, eastern states could be looking at drier-than-usual conditions, while southern regions may see some days that are unexpectedly hot for this time of year. And it doesn’t stop there. The SSW could also interfere with other weather drivers, like the negative Indian Ocean Dipole, which was expected to bring spring rainfall to parts of the country. If the polar vortex really shifts, that rain might not arrive as planned. Fresh figures from the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) reveal both criminal incidents and recorded offences have been climbing steadily since the end of COVID-19 lockdowns. Police aren’t happy. Deputy Commissioner for Regional Operations Bob Hill called the trend “unacceptable.” “As a society, we simply cannot allow the level of crime we are seeing to become normalised and accepted,” he said.“Every Victorian deserves to feel safe in their home, within the community and on the roads.” In the 12 months to June 30, police logged 483,583 criminal incidents – up 18.3% from the previous year’s 408,930. That’s the highest figure since reporting began in 2004-05. To put it in perspective: since 2017, incidents are up 22%, while Victoria’s population has only grown by 12%. Melbourne is still the state’s crime hotspot, recording 18,097 incidents per 100,000 residents – a 17.4% jump on last year. That said, the per capita rate is still slightly lower than in 2017, when it peaked at 18,334. Key drivers of the spike: Theft offences up 33% overall Theft from motor vehicles almost doubled (+40%), jumping from 24,409 to 86,351 cases Family incidents rose 7.7% Alleged offender incidents involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people increased 31.7% The number of recorded offences overall also climbed, reaching 638,640 cases – up 15.7% in a single year.
