Wintry weather blast set to impact millions across Australia
Millions of people across Victoria, NSW, the ACT and Tasmania are set for a sudden return to wintry conditions from Tuesday.
A cold front will replace the recent spring warmth with much lower temperatures, strong winds and snow in elevated areas.
Tasmania and Victoria will feel the change first. Hobart is forecast to reach only 13°C, while Melbourne is expected to peak at around 14°C. The Bureau of Meteorology has also issued gale warnings for parts of the East Gippsland coast and western Tasmania.
The cold weather will move into NSW and the ACT on Wednesday.
Sydney, which reached 26°C on Monday, is forecast to drop to 18°C, with strong winds making conditions feel even colder.
Canberra will also see a sharp fall, from 21°C on Monday to around 13°C on Wednesday, followed by a frosty start on Thursday.
Forecasters expect temperatures across the four states and territories to fall below September averages.
Light snow is possible in the Victorian high country and southern NSW, with snow levels expected to fall to around 800 metres above sea level.
The wintry blast is expected to be short-lived. Temperatures should return closer to seasonal averages by Friday, followed by a fine and warmer weekend.
