Victorian public school teachers will take further industrial action next week as their dispute with the state government over wages and working conditions continues.

Members of the Australian Education Union (AEU) Victorian Branch have voted to hold a 24-hour statewide strike on Thursday, July 23, along with a ban on unpaid overtime.

AEU Victorian branch president Justin Mullaly said teachers were taking action because of concerns about school funding and increasing workloads.

He claimed Victorian public schools were facing a significant funding gap, with teachers, principals and support staff working around 12 hours of unpaid overtime each week on average.

The union also said heavy workloads were contributing to staff leaving the public education system.

The latest action follows a rejected pay deal earlier this year. Teachers previously voted against an offer that included pay increases of up to 32 per cent over four years and additional student-free days.

The Victorian government has urged the union to return to negotiations, warning the strike will disrupt families across the state.

The dispute has already led to major protests, including a statewide strike in March that attracted an estimated 35,000 participants in Melbourne. It was the first statewide teacher strike in Victoria since 2013.
