Victoria’s bushfire emergency is easing, but experts warn the danger is far from over.
All active fires have now been downgraded to watch-and-act alerts. Some residents, however, are still being told it is unsafe to return home. More than 350 buildings have been destroyed, and farmer Maxwell Dobson died in a blaze near Longwood.
Natural Hazards Research Australia chief Andrew Gissing says the fires could continue for weeks unless significant rain arrives. He warned summer is not over and conditions remain risky after months of dry weather.
Gissing said updated fire safety approaches, including earlier evacuation advice, likely prevented further loss of life. He noted this marks a shift from past strategies that encouraged people to stay and defend homes.
He also stressed the importance of home preparation. Clearing flammable material close to houses can reduce damage, as embers are a major cause of home losses during bushfires.
For the first time since late last week, Victoria has no total fire bans in place today. Fire danger ratings range from moderate to high, with cooler weather expected in the days ahead.
