Sri Lanka Railways launches online season tickets for private sector

Private-sector employees will be able to apply for monthly railway season tickets online from October 1, under a new Sri Lanka Railways initiative.
The service, previously available only to public-sector workers, will allow private-sector employees to apply remotely through the department’s online platform.
The programme was officially launched in Battaramulla in the presence of Deputy Transport Minister Dr. Prasanna Gunasena and Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Engineer Eranga Weeraratne.
Under the previous system, applicants had to submit forms, photographs, proof of residence and copies of their National Identity Cards within a specific period. The new process will allow users to verify their identity and obtain season tickets without visiting a railway station or office.
The initiative is being carried out jointly by the Ministries of Transport and Digital Economy, Sri Lanka Railways and a telecommunications service provider.
Authorities said the move is part of a wider effort to modernise railway services and reduce administrative delays.
A smart-ticketing pilot is already operating at selected stations along the Kelani Valley railway line. Online seat reservations are also being expanded gradually.
The latest initiative is expected to make monthly season ticket services faster, easier and more convenient for passengers.
