Sri Lanka emerges among world’s most improved travel destinations

Sri Lanka has been named among the top 10 fastest-improving travel and tourism economies in the world, according to the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Development Index 2026.
The recognition highlights Sri Lanka’s growing competitiveness as the global tourism industry enters a new phase of expansion.
The World Economic Forum reported that international tourist arrivals reached a record 1.5 billion in 2025, signalling strong growth in global travel.
Sri Lanka’s improved position reflects progress across key areas that support tourism, including infrastructure, connectivity, tourism services, sustainability, natural resources and cultural attractions.
The country also benefits from its wide range of experiences within a relatively small area. Travellers can explore ancient cities and UNESCO-recognised heritage sites, visit tea-growing regions in the central hills, experience wildlife in national parks and enjoy beaches and coastal communities.
The latest recognition also comes as travellers increasingly look for authentic experiences, cultural connections, nature and more sustainable tourism options.
The World Economic Forum noted that several emerging tourism economies are improving their competitiveness rapidly, with countries across the Asia-Pacific region playing an important role in global tourism growth.
Sri Lanka’s inclusion in the top 10 reflects the country’s growing presence in the international travel market and its ability to offer a combination of heritage, wildlife, nature, culture and hospitality.
The report also highlights the importance of balancing tourism growth with sustainability and strong infrastructure as destinations prepare for continued increases in international travel.
For Sri Lanka, the recognition adds to the country’s growing profile as a diverse destination capable of offering travellers multiple experiences within a single trip.
