Sri Lanka and Australia strengthen strategic maritime cooperation

Sri Lanka and Australia have concluded the sixth round of Senior Officials Talks and the fourth round of the Strategic Maritime Dialogue, with both sides agreeing to strengthen cooperation across several key areas.
The talks were held in Colombo on September 21, 2026, according to Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry.
The discussions were co-chaired by Sarah Storey, First Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia at Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and M.R.K. Lenagala, Additional Secretary at Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism.
Officials discussed opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation in areas including political affairs, agriculture, trade, defence and education.
The two countries also agreed to deepen cooperation on regional, multilateral and maritime issues.
The latest talks highlight the continued development of Sri Lanka-Australia relations, with maritime cooperation remaining an important part of the bilateral partnership.
