Origin Energy to repay thousands over misleading electricity savings plan

Origin Energy will refund more than 4,500 customers after an investigation found some households were charged more than expected under one of its electricity plans.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) found customers on Origin’s “Ongoing Savers” plan paid higher costs than those on the company’s basic energy plan, despite the plan name suggesting better value.
Origin has been ordered to provide around $270,000 in refunds, with affected customers expected to receive an average of about $60 through a direct refund or account credit.
Origin said the issue affected only a small number of customers and apologised, adding that improvements have been made to prevent similar problems.
The ACCC has also reminded Australians to regularly compare electricity plans, saying customers could save money by reviewing their current deals or asking their provider for a better offer.
Consumers are encouraged to use official comparison tools and check how their plan compares with available alternatives.
