New Age Limit Introduced for Dual Citizenship Dependents

The Department of Immigration & Emigration of Sri Lanka has revised the eligibility criteria for dependents applying for dual citizenship, introducing a strict age threshold that takes effect on October 1, 2026.
According to a special notice issued by the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne, Australia, on September 29, 2026, only unmarried children under the age of 21 will be eligible for inclusion as dependents under a principal applicant’s dual citizenship application.
Under the new regulations, any individual who has reached or exceeded the age of 21 will no longer qualify to apply as a dependent child.
Applicants aged 21 years or older who wish to obtain Sri Lankan dual citizenship must select an eligible main category and submit an independent application as a principal applicant.
The update replaces previous dependency parameters and requires families currently preparing joint applications to ensure dependent applicants meet the revised age limit prior to submission.
