Millions of Australians cut heating as rising power bills bite

A new survey has found that more than half of Australians are using less heating this winter to keep electricity bills under control.
Research by Canstar shows many households are also choosing cheaper electric heaters, even though lower-priced models can cost more to run over time.
Experts say simple, no-cost steps such as wearing warmer clothing, closing doors and windows, and blocking draughts can help reduce heating costs by keeping homes warmer for longer.
The study also found that selecting the right heater for the size of a room can make a big difference. While fan heaters are suitable for quickly warming small spaces, oil heaters are generally more efficient for heating larger rooms over extended periods.
Meanwhile, eligible households in parts of New South Wales, south-east Queensland and South Australia can access up to three hours of free daytime electricity under the Australian Government’s Solar Sharer Offer, provided they have a smart meter and participate through an eligible energy retailer.
