Millions across south-east Australia face heavy rain and storms
Millions of people across south-east Australia are facing several days of heavy rain and stormy weather as a low-pressure system moves through the region.
The system is expected to develop over south-western New South Wales on Friday before moving towards Victoria on Saturday.
Parts of western NSW could experience severe thunderstorms, with damaging winds and large hail possible.
Victoria is also expected to see significant rainfall. Strong south-easterly winds along the southern Victorian coast could bring heavy rain to Gippsland, the Strzelecki Ranges and Mount Baw Baw.
The Otway Ranges could receive 50–80mm or more on Saturday, with severe thunderstorm warnings possible for Gippsland and the Otways.
A Flood Watch is in place for Gippsland, north-eastern Victoria and central parts of the state on Friday.
The Bureau of Meteorology expects some parts of Victoria to receive up to 30mm on Friday, as a band of heavy rain moves across areas including Macedon and the Latrobe Valley. Thunderstorms are also possible.
The latest forecast follows heavy rainfall across Victoria on Thursday. Some areas recorded 27mm between 2pm and 5pm, almost half the monthly average.
The State Emergency Service received almost 200 calls for assistance, including from Toorak and South Melbourne.
Authorities are urging residents to stay alert and avoid driving through flooded roads, warning that floodwaters can be deeper and more dangerous than they appear.
