Melbourne is in for a wet week, with up to 45mm of rain expected before the Melbourne Cup.
The Bureau of Meteorology says steady rain will continue through Thursday, following a soggy start to the week. Temperatures are forecast to reach a cool 16°C on Monday.
In just two hours on Monday morning, Hampton recorded 25mm of rain, while Moorabbin, Frankston, and Viewbank saw between 10–16mm.
Senior meteorologist Helen Reid said the rain will stay steady but not extreme. “If your gutters aren’t cleared, it could cause some issues, but we’re not expecting major downpours,” she said.
The State Emergency Service (SES) has already responded to 74 calls for help since Sunday night — mostly for fallen trees, minor flooding, and building damage.
The Sunbury train line faced delays of up to 15 minutes due to the weather, though other services were running normally.
Unfortunately, the rain will linger into Melbourne Cup Day, with up to 10mm expected on Tuesday. Racegoers can also expect strong south-westerly winds, so “hang on to your hats,” Reid warned.
Showers are likely to ease by Thursday’s Oaks Day, with warmer, clearer conditions expected by the end of the week.
Melbourne typically experiences its wettest months between October and December — and this year is proving no exception.
