Horton Plains to introduce Daily Visitor Limits and Online Booking System

Authorities are preparing to introduce daily visitor limits and an online advance booking system at Horton Plains National Park to protect its fragile ecosystem.
The proposal was discussed during a special field inspection and progress review held at Horton Plains on August 29, chaired by Deputy Environment Minister Anton Jayakody.
Under the proposed system, visitors would book specific time slots online. This would help officials control visitor numbers and manage the flow of tourists more effectively.
Authorities are also considering changes to entrance fees to ease overcrowding and encourage more responsible, high-value tourism.
Horton Plains is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is recognised for its rich biodiversity and environmentally sensitive landscape.
The proposed measures form part of a wider plan to develop sustainable eco-tourism while protecting the park for future generations.
The meeting was attended by Environment Ministry Secretary K. R. Uduwawala, senior officials from the Departments of Wildlife Conservation and Forest Conservation, and Horton Plains field officers, including the Park Warden.
