AusNewsLanka - News for Australians - Dandenong underpass set to open this September
This is a developing story brought to you by Aus News Lanka, your trusted source for news for Sri Lankans in Australia and beyond.

A new road underpass in Dandenong will soon provide a direct connection between Princes Highway–Lonsdale Street and Cheltenham and Hammond roads, improving traffic flow for motorists across the area.

The underpass has a 5.4-metre clearance, allowing trucks and other tall vehicles to travel beneath the rail bridge without restrictions. A new signalised intersection has also been built to improve safety and traffic movement.

Construction was a major undertaking, with crews removing the equivalent of 13 Olympic-sized swimming pools of soil and pouring more than 10,000 cubic metres of concrete to build the underpass.

The project also includes colourful underpass walls inspired by Dandenong’s diverse community, along with new landscaping featuring thousands of native trees, shrubs and flowering plants.

Pedestrians and cyclists will benefit from a new shared path along Webster Street, connecting directly to the existing Dandenong Creek Trail.

The project also saw the removal of the Webster Street level crossing, the last remaining crossing on the Cranbourne and Pakenham rail lines. Before its closure, more than 200 trains passed through the crossing each day, with boom gates often closed for over an hour during the morning peak, causing significant traffic delays.
