Cold and Wet Weather Set to Hit Australia

Get your umbrellas and winter coats ready — parts of Australia are in for a wet and chilly week.
Perth is already feeling it, with heavy rain kicking off on Sunday and set to continue through to Wednesday. The city could see up to 50mm of rain across the three days, making it the heaviest rainfall of 2025 so far. It's a much-needed downpour too, considering Perth's been running below its usual rainfall totals this year. The silver lining? Even with all the rain, it won't be especially cold.
But over on the east coast, it’s a different story. A cold front is sweeping across today, bringing with it the first big chill of winter. Expect the coldest temps of the year so far in western and northern New South Wales, as well as southern Queensland.
This front is moving north quickly and could even bring some rain to northeastern NSW. In the mountains, there’s a good chance of a few centimetres of snow, especially in the alpine regions.
And it doesn't stop there — a polar airmass is on the way later this week, set to surge into southeastern Australia. If the forecasts are right, it could deliver significant snowfall in the highest parts of the mainland’s alpine areas.
That said, snow lovers might want to temper their excitement just a little. According to Weatherzone, these kinds of systems can be a bit unpredictable — a “hit or miss” kind of deal. Still, the signs are pointing to a solid start to the snow season next week, with more consistent snow likely on the way.
So whether you're braving the rain in Perth or bundling up for the cold blast out east, it’s officially feeling like winter across the country.
