With Christmas just days away, weather forecasts are becoming more reliable — and this year’s outlook is clearer than usual.
After a week of heat and storms across southern Australia, conditions are expected to settle by Christmas. A large high-pressure system near the Great Australian Bight is likely to dominate, bringing mostly sunny and stable weather across southern states from New South Wales to Western Australia.
Sydney and Melbourne may see some coastal cloud or a brief light shower due to onshore winds, but widespread rain on Christmas Day is unlikely. Hobart could get showers before Christmas, though skies are expected to clear by the 25th.
Temperatures will vary. Cooler southerly winds should keep much of south-east Australia below average, while Western Australia faces hotter conditions. Perth is tipped to be the hottest capital, with temperatures potentially nearing 40°C on Christmas Day.
In the north, weather will be more unsettled. Much of Queensland is set for heavy rain early next week, with showers likely to continue in the tropics on Christmas Day. It remains uncertain whether south-east Queensland will dry out in time.
Across the Top End and Kimberley, wet-season storms are expected, but there is currently no sign of a tropical cyclone.
Overall, Christmas Day is shaping up to be mostly sunny for the south, hot in the west, and wet in the north.
