Cabinet approves 12 automated passenger gates for BIA
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved plans to install 12 automated passenger clearance gates at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) to speed up immigration and passenger clearance procedures.
The government had previously approved the purchase of four automated gates in May 2025.
Following the continued increase in international passenger traffic, the government has now decided to expand the system by adding eight more gates, bringing the total to 12.
The automated clearance system is currently available only to Sri Lankan nationals. Plans are also underway to extend the facility to foreign travellers entering and leaving Sri Lanka.
The expansion for foreign nationals is expected to be introduced alongside Sri Lanka’s e-passport system in 2027.
The government says the additional gates are needed to meet growing passenger demand, supported by the expansion of the aviation, tourism and business sectors.
Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs to begin procurement and installation of all 12 gates in accordance with government procurement procedures.
The move is expected to improve passenger processing and reduce waiting times at Sri Lanka’s main international gateway.
