The bystander who helped stop one of the attackers at Bondi Beach has spoken publicly for the first time from his hospital bed.
Sydney shop owner Ahmed Al Ahmed has been praised for confronting and disarming a gunman during the deadly attack at the weekend. Video from the scene shows him rushing the attacker and knocking the weapon away after the shooter ran out of ammunition.
In a short message shared online, Mr Al Ahmed thanked supporters and asked for prayers, saying he hoped his injuries would heal quickly. The message was recorded as he was being treated in hospital and later translated by an international news outlet.
Despite his actions, Mr Al Ahmed suffered serious injuries and remains under medical care. His lawyer says he was hit multiple times in the left arm and shoulder and has lost a significant amount of blood. There are concerns he could lose his arm.
Those close to him say he does not regret stepping in and acted purely out of instinct. They describe him as a modest man who did not seek attention and simply felt compelled to help others in danger.
A business in southern Sydney also issued a statement clarifying earlier confusion about Mr Al Ahmed’s background, while offering support and wishing him a full recovery.
Mr Al Ahmed’s bravery has been widely recognised as a powerful act of courage amid a devastating tragedy.
