Australia enters summer with severe weather extremes

Australia’s first day of summer is delivering two completely different seasons across the country.
Perth is sweating through intense heat, heading for 37°C — close to its hottest December 1 on record. The north-west is even hotter, with a severe heatwave warning issued for the Kimberley.
On the other side of the country, Melbourne is barely reaching 16°C. The city may even break its coldest-ever summer day, with thick cloud, showers, and a real winter feel. Snow is still falling in the Victorian Alps and Tasmanian Highlands after an unusually cold end to spring.
Two major weather systems are behind this dramatic split — hot inland air being dragged towards WA, while lingering winter-like conditions settle over the southeast.
Relief is on the way, though. Perth should cool to 28°C tomorrow, while Melbourne is expected to warm up by midweek with a top of 27°C.
