Australia and Sri Lanka strengthen cooperation on electoral integrity

Australia and Sri Lanka have further strengthened their longstanding partnership through a new agreement on electoral cooperation.
The Australian Electoral Commission and Sri Lanka’s Election Commission signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Colombo on September 2.
The agreement will support closer cooperation between the two institutions, including sharing expertise, exchanging experiences and improving election management and administration.
Australian High Commissioner Matthew Duckworth said strong electoral systems are essential for public confidence and effective democracy. He said the agreement reflects the close partnership between the two Indian Ocean neighbours.
The signing was attended by senior representatives from both electoral commissions, including Australian Electoral Commission Acting Assistant Commissioner Melinda Vernon, International Engagement Director Joanne Ridolfi, Sri Lanka Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake and General of Elections Commissioner Rasika Peiris.
The new MoU provides a practical framework for Australia and Sri Lanka to learn from each other and further strengthen democratic institutions as the two countries approach 80 years of partnership.
